From Shadows to Spotlight: The Gavel Journey That Lit Up My Life

It was an unremarkable Thursday in May 2023. With some free time on my hands, Gv. Akarshana introduced me to a club called Gavel. Initially, I thought it was just another club. Little did I know, this was the start of the most beautiful chapter of my university life.

As an introvert, I doubted whether Gavel was for me. However, just a week later, I eagerly attended Gavel meetings each week. Within a month, I participated in table topics, discussing subjects I never imagined I would address. I never expected to celebrate my life daily with Gavel. Gavel made each day more special. Before Gavel, my life consisted of Awurudu, Halloween, Christmas, and travel. But after joining Gavel, it became Awurudu with Gavel, Gavel-tine, Halloween with Gavel, Christmas with Gavel, and travel with Gavel. My life before Gavel was black and white, and Gavel added a vibrant colours to it.

I met friends from different faculties and various personalities. This diverse mix was incredible, and I loved it. Nothing could beat that vibe. I still remember the first joint meeting with University of Peradeniya. Attending that meeting made me realize that Gavel was not just a club; it was a family. After the joint meeting with the University of Peradeniya, I counted the days until the next meeting with the University of Wayamba.

Despite being someone who often lacks the motivation to socialize, I found myself singing songs at Gavel events, dancing during Gavel Awurudu, and writing blogs. These experiences led me to form friendships with fellow Gaveliers I had never met before. Eventually, I became an organizing committee member of Speech Master, taking on responsibilities that once seemed daunting. Gavel brought me into the spotlight, a stark contrast to my usual preference for standing in the background.

Wherever I go, seeing a Gavel friend brings back endless laughter and inside jokes. It’s like having a special language that nobody else understands. Each encounter reminds me of the bonds we formed and the challenges we faced together. Public speaking with Gavel was not just about improving a skill; it was about transforming my entire outlook on life.
